‘Inside Out 2’ didn’t have to hit so hard; I am writing after taking my morning deep breaths. This sequel takes Riley’s emotional journey to an entirely new level, delving into the complexities of adolescence and the inevitable onset of anxiety. While the first film depicted Riley navigating a big move as a child — a scenario I personally didn’t experience — ‘Inside Out 2’ manages to be both universally accessible and profoundly specific.

We all go through puberty, experiencing significant changes in our bodies and social dynamics, which makes this sequel resonate on a deeper level. While I didn’t experience anxiety during my teen years, it emerged later, coinciding with major life transitions like entering the workforce and becoming legit independent. This parallel is indicative of how anxiety, as a cultural and medical concept, has become more prominent and understood in recent years. Where once it might have been dismissed as mere drama, today, it is recognized as a serious and legitimate mental health condition.

‘Inside Out 2’ poignantly illustrates that change is difficult at any life stage. As we grow older, the complexities of life become more apparent, and our emotions reflect this increased complexity. The film’s central message — that balance is crucial — remains the same. We can’t always be joyful to the point of toxic positivity, nor can we be consumed by anxiety without losing our sense of self. Anxiety, when managed, can drive us toward achieving our goals, but if it dominates, it can be debilitating.

In true Pixar fashion, ‘Inside Out 2’ deeply resonates. There is a scene near the end where we witness Riley’s panic attack, a scenario all too common in today’s world. It brings to light the overwhelming and paralyzing feelings that many face in today’s world of heightened anxiety, making it feel deeply personal if you’ve ever experienced such anxiety.

Another profoundly moving moment is Joy’s realization that she cannot entirely stop anxiety and that growing up might mean feeling less joy. Adulthood is harsh, filled with daily struggles and responsibilities that starkly contrast the simpler joys of childhood, often leaving us nostalgic for the past (though not yet for teens!). The film prompts us to reflect on the bittersweet realities of maturity and the constant pursuit of balance amidst life’s challenges.

Pixar has once again knocked it out of the park. ‘Inside Out 2’ is real and raw, grounded in psychological facts. The concept of a “brainstorm” was smart, along with the visual representation of secrets and bad memories. I felt intense second-hand embarrassment from Riley’s blunders. Particularly insightful is the film’s portrayal of the sense of self and beliefs, illustrating how these are core to our identity and become more defined as we grow older. The film’s depiction of the inner workings of the mind over just three days is truly impressive.

While ‘Inside Out 1’ focused on family, ‘Inside Out 2’ shifts its attention to friendships, aligning with the developmental stage of the early teen years. This seamless progression makes me eagerly anticipate what ‘Inside Out 3’ might bring — perhaps romantic love for Riley?

‘Inside Out 2’ is a beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant film that continues to explore the intricate dance of our emotions with depth, sensitivity, and insight. Pixar has once again proven their storytelling prowess, creating a sequel that is as meaningful and impactful as its predecessor.
